Disability Data Institutionalized Populations Data Lookup Tool Tutorials & Tips

Follow the steps below to access the most recent county level disability estimates from the American Community Survey (ACS) and institutional population counts from the 2020 Decennial Census.

The resulting table will automatically include: population estimates and margins of error, disability rates, and metropolitan classification. You can also download the full dataset (ZIP format) for all counties in all states.

Data sources: The data provided in this lookup is from the 2017-2021 5-year American Community Survey, the 2020 Decennial Census, and the 2020 OMB Metropolitan-Micropolitan Statistical Areas delineation files.

Limitations: There are some significant limitations with ACS disability data and Census institutional population counts.

  • In the American Community Survey, counties with lower populations (generally more rural) may have high margins of error (MOE) associated with some estimates. If a county has a high margin of error for the disability population, the remaining rate estimates may also be unreliable.
  • The 2020 Decennial Census does not make data on people with disabilities living in institutions available at the county level. Rather the data in the lookup tool represent the general population living in institutions. However, people with disabilities are overrepresented in these institutions.
