Rural public transportation. Who uses it? Rural residents who do use public transportation have some interesting, but not unexpected characteristics. Women make up fifty-one percent of the rural population, but are sixty-two percent of rural public transportation ridership. Elderly people make up eighteen percent of the rural population, but are thirty-six percent of rural public transportation ridership. According the the U.S. Census, people with disabilities make up thirteen percent of the rural population, but are twenty-four percent of rural public transportation ridership. |
