Description of Table 1.

Demography of Disability in Urban and Rural America.

This table provides estimates of the numbers of individuals with disabilities in metro and non-metro areas, the percent of individuals with disabilities in metro and non-metro areas, the numbers of individuals with severe disability in metro and non-metro areas, and the percent of individuals with severe disabilities in metro and non-metro areas.

For central counties of metro areas, population of 1 million or more, 21,141,448 individuals have a disability.  This is 17.83 percent.  10,526,552 have a severe disability.  This is 8.88 percent.

For fringe counties of metro areas, population of 1 million or more, 1,827,049 individuals have a disability.  This is 17.87 percent.  909,711 have a severe disability.  This is 8.9 percent.

For counties with populations of 250,000 to 1 million, 11,452,952 individuals have a disability.  This is 19.33 percent.  5,702,552 have a severe disability.   This is 9.62 percent.

For counties in metro areas with populations under 250,000, 4,103,599 individuals have a disability.  This is 19.67 percent.  2,043,232 have a severe disability.   This is 9.79 percent.

Subtotals for metro areas show 38,525,048 individuals have a disability.  This is 18.44 percent.  19,182,047 have a severe disability.  This is 9.18 percent.

For nonmetro counties with urban populations of 20,000 or greater which are adjacent to metro areas, 2,108,069 individuals have a disability.  This is 21.07 percent.   1,010,892 have a severe disability.  This is 10.1 percent.

For nonmetro counties with urban populations of 20,000 or greater which are nont adjacent to metro areas, 1,413,286 individuals have a disability.  This is 20.55 percent.  677,718 have a severe disability.  This is 9.86 percent.

For nonmetro counties with urban populations of 2,500 to 20,000 which are adjacent to metro areas, 4,122,080 individuals have a disability.  This is 23.74 percent.   1,976,688 have a severe disability.  This is 11.45 percent.

For nonmetro counties with urban populations of 2,500 to 20,000 which are not adjacent to metro areas, 3,250,697 individuals have a disability.  This is 24.32 percent.   1,558,819 have a severe disability.  This is 11.66 percent.

For completely rural counties which are adjacent to metro areas, 672,115 individuals have a disability.  This is 25.34 percent.  322,309 have a severe disability.   This is 12.15 percent.

For completely rural counties which are not adjacent to metro areas, 976,587 individuals have a disability.  This is 26.56 percent.  468,311 have a severe disability.  This is 12.74 percent.

Subtotals for non-metro areas show 12,542,834 individuals have a disability.  This is 23.3 percent.  6,014,737 have a severe disability.  This is 11.17 percent.

Totals for metro and non-metro areas show 51,067,882 individuals have a disability.   This is 19.44 percent.  25,196,784 have a severe disability.  This is 9.59 percent.
