Disability Demographics for U.S. Metropolitan and Non-metropolitan Counties. There are 3,141 U.S. counties and a total population of 281,421,906. There are 257,167,527 civilian, non-institutionalized individuals, 5 years and older. 49,746,248 (19.3%) have a disability. According to the Office of Management and Budget county classifications of November 2004, there are 1,089 metropolitan counties with a total population of 232,579,940. There are 212,657,595 metropolitan civilian, non-institutionalized individuals, 5 years and older. 40,091,987 (18.9%) have a disability. There are 2,052 non-metropolitan counties with a total population of 48,841,966. There are 44,509,932 non-metropolitan civilian, non-institutionalized individuals, 5 years and older. 9,654,261 (21.7%) have a disability. Non-metropolitan counties comprise micropolitan and non-core counties. There are 692 micropolitan counties with a total population of 29,477,802. There are 26,843,971 micropolitan civilian, non-institutionalized individuals, 5 years and older. 5,625,928 (21%) have a disability. There are 1,360 non-core counties with a total population of 19,364,164. There are 17,665,961 non-core civilian, non-institutionalized individuals, 5 years and older. 4,028,333 (22.8%) have a disability. End of description.
