Description of map 2:Where Do Rural People with Disabilities Live? Population Distribution by Urbanized Areas and Urban Clusters. The scale is 1 1/4 inches for each 500 miles. This map shows the locations of U.S. urbanized areas in blue and urban clusters in green. Rural areas are shown in gray. Most urbanized areas and urban clusters are located east of the Mississippi River, with a heavy concentration along the northeast coast. The Florida coastline, Great Lakes, Texas Gulf of Mexico coastline, California coastline and Northwest Washington state also have especially heavy concentrations of urbanized areas. Two percent of total U.S. land mass is urbanized area, encompassing 72,021 square miles. Sixty-eight percent (192,323,824 people) of the total U.S. population live in urbanized areas. 33,202,032 of urbanized residents have a disability. Urban clusters are more evenly-distributed across the country and every state has at least one. Alaska, Hawaii, the Plains states and Northwest (with the exception of Washington) have the fewest. One percent of total U.S. land mass is occupied by urban clusters encompassing 20,485 square miles. Eleven percent of the total U.S. population (30,036,715 people) live in urban clusters. 5,691,886 of urban cluster residents have a disability. Rural America represents 97 percent of the total U.S. land mass and encompasses 3,444,930 square miles. Twenty-one percent of the total U.S. population (59,061,367 people) live in rural areas. 10,852,330 rural Americans have a disability.
